"Pesticides are a collective term for chemicals intended to kill unwanted insects, plants, molds, and rodents. Children encounter pesticides daily and have unique susceptibilities to their potential toxicity. Acute poisoning risks are clear, and understanding of chronic health implications from both acute and chronic exposure are emerging. Evidence demonstrates associations between early life exposure to pesticides and pediatric cancers, decreased cognitive function, and behavioral problems."

Expert Cancer Prevention Advice

The following cancer prevention recommendations are from the 2010 President's Cancer Panel Report:

"Individuals can take important steps in their own lives to reduce their exposure to environmental elements that increase risk for cancer and other diseases. And collectively, individual small actions can drastically reduce the number and levels of environmental contaminants."

1. It is vitally important to recognize that children are far more susceptible to damage from environmental carcinogens and endocrine-disrupting compounds than adults.

To the extent possible, parents and child care providers should choose foods, house and garden products, play spaces, toys, medicines, and medical tests that will minimize children’s exposure to toxics.

Ideally, both mothers and fathers should avoid exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals and known or suspected carcinogens prior to a child’s conception and throughout pregnancy and early life, when risk of damage is greatest.

2. Individuals and families have many opportunities to reduce or eliminate chemical exposures. For example:
Family exposure to numerous occupational chemicals can be reduced by removing shoes before entering the home and washing work clothes separately from the other family laundry.

Filtering home tap or well water can decrease exposure to numerous known or suspected carcinogens and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Unless the home water source is known to be contaminated, it is preferable to use filtered tap water instead of commercially bottled water.

Storing and carrying water in stainless steel, glass, or BPA- and phthalate-free containers will reduce exposure to endocrine-disrupting and other chemicals that may leach into water from plastics. This action also will decrease the need for plastic bottles, the manufacture of which produces toxic by-products, and reduce the need to dispose of and recycle plastic bottles.

Similarly, microwaving food and beverages in ceramic or glass instead of plastic containers will reduce exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals that may leach into food when containers are heated.

Exposure to pesticides can be decreased by choosing, to the extent possible, food grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers and washing conventionally grown produce to remove residues.

Similarly, exposure to antibiotics, growth hormones, and toxic run-off from livestock feed lots can be minimized by eating free-range meat raised without these medications if it is available. Avoiding or minimizing consumption of processed, charred, and well-done meats will reduce exposure to carcinogenic heterocyclic amines and polyaromatic hydrocarbons.

Individuals can consult information sources to help them make informed decisions about the household products they buy and use.

Properly disposing of pharmaceuticals, household chemicals, paints, and other materials will minimize drinking water and soil contamination.

Individuals also can choose products made with non-toxic substances or environmentally safe chemicals.

Similarly, reducing or ceasing landscaping pesticide and fertilizer use will help keep these chemicals from contaminating drinking water supplies.

Turning off lights and electrical devices when not in use reduces exposure to petroleum combustion by-products because doing so reduces the need for electricity, much of which is generated using fossil fuels.

Driving a fuel-efficient car, biking or walking when possible, or using public transportation also cuts the amount of toxic auto exhaust in the air.

Individuals can reduce or eliminate exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke in the home, auto, and public places. Most counseling and medications to help smokers quit are covered by health insurance or available at little or no cost.

3. Adults and children can reduce their exposure to electromagnetic energy by wearing a headset when using a cell phone, texting instead of calling, and keeping calls brief.

4. It is advisable to periodically check home radon levels. Home buyers should conduct a radon test in any home they are considering purchasing.

5. To reduce exposure to radiation from medical sources, patients should discuss with their health care providers the need for medical tests or procedures that involve radiation exposure. Key considerations include personal history of radiation exposure, the expected benefit of the test, and alternative ways of obtaining the same information. In addition, to help limit cumulative medical radiation exposure, individuals can create a record of all imaging or nuclear medicine tests received and, if known, the estimated radiation dose for each test.

6. Adults and children can avoid overexposure to ultraviolet light by wearing protective clothing and sunscreens when outdoors and avoiding exposure when the sunlight is most intense.

7. Each person can become an active voice in his or her community. To a greater extent than many realize, individuals have the power to affect public policy by letting policymakers know that they strongly support environmental cancer research and measures that will reduce or remove from the environment toxics that are known or suspected carcinogens or endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Individuals also can influence industry by selecting non-toxic products and, where these do not exist, communicating with manufacturers and trade organizations about their desire for safer products."

The 2008-2009 report was submitted to President Obama and released to the public on May 6, 2010.

The Panel chose to focus this report on "Reducing Our Environmental Cancer Risk."
By "environmental" they mean our homes, jobs and schools, our food and water, medical tests and treatments--our every day life.  As to the reason they chose this topic the Panel said this:
"Over the past several years, the Panel has noted the growing body of research on increased cancer risks associated with various environmental contaminants."
"Additionally, in previous meeting series addressing other topics, issues concerning possible associations between environmental influences and risk for specific cancers have been raised."
"Further, public and governmental awareness of environmental influences on health has grown substantially. For these reasons, the Panel concluded that an exploration of the current understanding and emerging science regarding environmental cancer risk would be both informative and timely."

Foods That Prevent Prostate Cancer

"A group of United Kingdom-based researchers identified four plant foods (green tea, pomegranate, turmeric, and broccoli) known to have anti-cancer properties. They created a specific concentrated blend of these four cancer-fighting foods in a capsule to be taken by mouth twice daily. Then they tested its effect in the most stringent way known to science - a double blind, placebo controlled, randomised trial."

 "There is a long list of other natural substances for which there is scientific evidence of their usefulness in dealing with prostate cancer.  This impressive list includes: flaxseed, cruciferous vegetables, vitamin D, soy isoflavones, omega 3 fatty acids, coenzyme Q10, lycopene, selenium, boron, zinc, milk thistle, saw palmetto, vitamin K, ginger, garlic, guinea hen weed (anamu), sour sop leaf (graviola), watercress extract, and grapeseed extract."

We cannot live without fresh water.

What's happening in West Virginia, the poisoning of their rivers, wildlife & citizens, happens on a smaller scale almost every day across the U.S. We need to  push lawmakers to reform the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976.

It was a mistake to grandfather in more than 50,000 untested chemicals.  It was a mistake to force citizens to be lab rats while the government attempts to determine toxicity.  Mistakes can and must be fixed.  We need real reform now!

"Pancreatic cancer is one of the most fatal types of cancer, with a 5-year survival of about 5.5%."

"High consumption of red meat and/or processed meat has been associated with increased risk of some gastrointestinal cancers, such as colorectal and stomach cancer."

"Whether red & processed meat consumption is a risk factor also for pancreatic cancer remains unclear. We therefore conducted a meta-analysis of studies to examine the associations of red and processed meat consumption with pancreatic cancer risk."

"Findings from this meta-analysis indicate that processed meat consumption is positively associated with pancreatic cancer risk. Red meat consumption was associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer in men."

Favorite Organic Brands & Tips for Eating Clean

When it comes to preventing cancer, the importance of eating clean food cannot be understated. By clean food I mean organic or GMO-free foods. (to avoid known carcinogens)  Even though most of us are loyal to our favorite brands & purchase them automatically, it isn't hard to find new favorites that offer a higher quality product.  To help you get started, I've made a list of our favorite organic brands & some tips for finding and affording healthier food.

It is very important to limit consumption of canned foods because most cans contain BPA, a known endocrine disruptor which has been linked to cancer in numerous studies.  BPA can also be found in other types of packaging and there's no guarantee that products that replace it are any safer.

Buying in bulk is a great way to avoid all packaging if you bring your own containers.  And of course, purchasing as much fresh produce as possible is good for many reasons.

Until genetically engineered foods are required to be labeled in the USA (as they are in numerous other countries), it is up to individuals to seek out foods grown & produced without GMO seeds.  The Non-GMO Project provides an extensive directory of products verified to be free of GMO ingredients.

New Study: Carcinogens & Cancer Preventors in Diet

 "Diet can have both positive and negative effects on carcinogenesis. Several substances in diet such as heterocyclic amines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, N-nitroso compounds and alcohols have been associated with increased risk of cancer, whereas certain compounds such as phytochemicals and probiotics have cancer preventing properties. This paper aims to review the carcinogenic and cancer preventive properties of dietary substances and their possible mechanisms of action."

"Diet and nutritional factors are one of several major causes of carcinogenesis. Chemoprevention by dietary substances is now considered to be an inexpensive, readily applicable, acceptable and accessible approach to cancer control and management. With health-care costs being a key issue today, it would be cost-effective to promote awareness and consumption of such substances as a cancer-preventive strategy for the general public. Hence, a good knowledge of diet, nutrition and life-styles are important to reduce cancer risk in the society."

The Reason Why Everyone Seems to Have Cancer

The New York Times recently published an article by a physics author titled, "Why Everyone Seems to Have Cancer".  It was basically a fatalistic biopsy of cancer and why it's killing more people, but it never even touches on why everyone seems to have cancer.  That question is easy to answer:

The reason everyone seems to have cancer
 is because the percentage of people being diagnosed with cancer
has been increasing for decades.

 As the population increases it is normal for the actual number of people diagnosed with cancer to also increase.  But the percentage of people diagnosed with cancer has also increased, to epidemic numbers.  Nearly 1,600 deaths & 4,600 new diagnosis every day in the U.S.!

The cancer industry feeds the media the familiar mantra: "cancer deaths are being reduced every year."  They rarely report the other changes; the steady increases in cancer diagnosis, especially in children.

Half of all men and 1/3 of all women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their life.  And no matter how encouraging 'reduced death rates' sounds, keep in mind that cancer treatment, chemotherapy & radiation, cause cancer and numerous other serious health problems.  There is no 'cure'.

According to recent National Cancer Institute estimates:

U.S. New Cancer Diagnosis in 2013 = 1,660,290
138,357 adults every month 
31,953 every week 
4,565 every day 
190 every hour 
3 adults every minute

U.S. Cancer Deaths in 2013 = 580,350 
48,36 adults every month 
11,169 every week 
1,596 every day 
66 every hour 
1 adult every minute

Avoidable Causes of Childhood Cancer

Email rarely excites me, but this is one that I'm compelled to share with everyone.  And although I don't usually make product recommendations, I am making an exception because this book's topic is critically important to all children and it is written by a doctor who doesn't play games with words or people's lives.

In their annual report to the nation last month (Dec 2013) the National Cancer Institute said this:

"During the period of 2001-2010, overall cancer incidence rates 
decreased among men, were stable among women, 
and increased among children."

Cancer prevention expert Dr. Samuel S. Epstein has written a new book titled and dedicated to the "Avoidable Causes of Childhood Cancer", a subject dear to my heart.  Contrary to common beliefs, childhood cancer incidence rates have been increasing for many decades and although some types have seen improvements in death rates, many remain unchanged.  In addition, childhood cancer survivors face life-long, chronic health problems, so cancer prevention is critical to their long-term health.

"In 2012, President Barack Obama inaugurated September as the “National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.” His proclamation stated, “The causes of pediatric cancer are still largely unknown.” However, the President has been misinformed, as their causes are well-known and documented. Disturbingly, the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society have also failed to warn the public of the increasing incidence and preventable causes of childhood cancer."

"These causes include: second hand smoke; carcinogens in pet collars; nitrite preservatives in processed meats and baby foods; carcinogenic pesticides, with environmental exposures from home, lawn, and drinking water; carcinogenic ingredients in baby bath and personal care products, and much more."

Vitamin D for Disease Prevention

 From a recent article by Dr. Joseph Mercola about the importance of Vitamin D in preventing numerous health problems including depression, Crohn's & cancer:

"An ever growing number of studies show that vitamin D has tremendous protective effects against a variety of different cancers, including pancreatic, lung, ovarian, breast, prostate, and skin cancers. Theories linking vitamin D deficiency to cancer have been tested and confirmed in more than 200 studies, and understanding of its physiological basis stems from more than 2,500 laboratory trials."
